Children of the Phoenix
Devolutes are the plebian masses of New Eden, as distinguished from the “normal” humans, who are further segregated into Prime and Non-Prime. When the Phoenix Project left Earth in 1961, ten thousand artificially inseminated embryos were transported with the Phoenix Ark, to provide greater genetic variation to the colony once it was established. However, the Long Exodus had a high casualty rate, and by the time New Eden was established, fewer than 50 Prime Subjects were left. The decision was made to use artificial birthing chambers, developed by Dr Heinrich Emshweiller, to allow the fetuses to develop and be born.
